WESTERN AUSTRALIA Cows Bombie 2011

Cows Bombie was the first major mission for SS3D – and one of the most terrifying moments in Storm Surfers history! In a freak jet-ski accident, Ross and Tom were almost killed. A photograph of the event was published in news media globally.

The Storm Surfers team have gone on missions to Cows on two previous occasions and scored epic rides. This break holds some of the largest waves in Australia, with swells making their way from Africa uninterrupted, before hitting the west coast.

Knowing the potential for awesome waves, we decided to use the rig we’d built to house the 3D Go-Pro cameras for the hero jet-ski. A typically cold and blustery start to the day, the team headed out into wet and windy on-shore conditions. On the second wave of the day, a massive wipe-out very nearly ended the entire SS3D shoot, when Tom’s jet-ski got caught on the lip of the wave and went over the falls, narrowly missing Ross. Our $15,000 camera rig was lost, the jet-ski had a hole punctured in it and started sinking and the team came back to shore totally demoralized. But nothing will stop the Storm Surfers and they headed back out on a different ski, with a temporary camera rig and scored some incredible waves all the way through until dusk.
