One of the things the Storm Surfers team loves – and where they stake their reputation – is hunting never-before-surfed waves.
Another thing we love is when we hit a mission and find absolutely perfect waves.
The Tasmanian boys – Marti Paradisis, James and Tyler Holmer-Cross and crew – had been tracking and studying a wave 35km south of Tasmania at an infamous rock known as Pedra Branca.
We hired a 90-foot fishing trawler and headed out to the break overnight. Waking up at dawn the following morning, we saw a perfectly groomed ocean delivering glassed-off, 30-foot plus waves. The session lasted the whole day, with some perfect rides and giant barrels. Bondi Resuce Lifeguard and Storm Surfers safety officer Kobi Graham scored a 10/10 ride.
The day was going perfectly until disaster struck with a super wipeout for Ross, who wasn’t even meant to be surfing due to a neck injury. Battered and exhausted, but essentially unharmed, the incident was a telling reminder of the extremity of the Storm Surfers pursuit!
The Pedra Branca mission, without doubt, goes down as the greatest Storm Surfers adventure of all time, with the footage and photos to prove it.
