TASMANIA Dangerous Banks 2007

In episode one, we set out on a mission to surf a break known as Dangerous Banks – a perfect never-before-surfed location for the Storm Surfers.

Local abalone fisherman Phil Critchlow and his son had been watching this reef off Hunter Island, northwestern Tasmania, for some years.

The team headed down to Tasmania to reconnoiter, then waited for a decent swell to arrive – which showed up a couple of months later.

Helicopters, jet-skis, boats and vehicles were all in place. At the last minute, big wave surfer Ian Walsh flew in from Hawaii, so as not to miss out on making history.

The team then undertook the 35 km trek on their jet-skis, around the headland to the break. They arrived to find a crazy, rogue reef, delivering big waves all over the place. It was almost impossible to find a decent take-off spot, but the team finally found somewhere to launch and nailed a series of great 20-foot waves.
