HAWAII Waimea Bay, Phantoms, Pipeline & Backyards 2011

At the beginning of the year, during the winter season in Hawaii, the Eddie Aikau Memorial Surfing Competition went from amber to red-alert, so big wave surf legends from across the world flew in, to tackle the famous Waimea Bay big waves and Pipeline.

Hawaii holds a special place for Tom Carroll, as he was the first non-Hawaiian to win at Pipeline – one of the ultimate achievements for any surfer. Ross Clarke-Jones also has a special place in his heart for Hawaii, as he won the Eddie Aikau in 2001.

The Storm Surfers team thought the ‘calling of the Eddie’ was an ideal opportunity to do the first 3D test shoot and sent a small team over to Hawaii. Although the ‘Eddie’ was called off, Ross and Tom still paddled out to catch some of the action in front of huge crowds.

They also decided to hit some less-crowded breaks, so grabbed a jet-ski and headed out to famous big-wave spots Phantoms and Backyards. They caught up with 11 times World Champion Kelly Slater and female big wave champ Maya Gabeira.
