Drift

Set in a remote town on Australia’s spectacular and rugged coastline in the early ‘70s, DRIFT tells the story of two brothers at the genesis of the modern surf industry.

Based on true stories from the era, Drift is the action filled story of a complex family of outsiders who struggle to escape their troubled past to forge a successful future…stumbling upon the worldwide multi-billion dollar cultural movement we know today.

RCJ’s big cameo

Our very own Ross Clark-Jones has a blink and you’ll miss it cameo in the film as Gomez. Ross has taken some time out to tell us about the movie.

About Drift

Determined to escape a life of factory work and petty crime, headstrong older brother Andy (Myles Pollard) and his wayward surf prodigy younger brother Jimmy (Xavier Samuel) form a volatile alliance. With their seamstress mother Kat (Robyn Malcolm) they fashion custom-made Drift wetsuits and new shorter surfboards out of their back yard garage.

Their fledgling business generates a powerful buzz amongst the hard-core local surfers, but the brothers’ progressive ideas are soon at odds with their conservative town and find themselves embroiled in a violent feud with a drug-dealing biker gang looking to manipulate Drift’s early success.

Enter JB, an infamous surf filmmaker (Sam Worthington) and Lani (Lesley-Ann Brandt), his gorgeous Hawaiian companion who drift into town just as the brothers’ business and troubles begin to escalate. The travellers embody the era’s anti-establishment vibe and are skeptical, but soon realize if the brothers can survive and stay true to their surfing roots, they might be part of something greater than they ever imagined.

Drift is in cinemas May 2 – Catch the full trailer

HONOLULU —A nearly 30-year friendship between legendary surfers Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones has come full circle with the release of the new film, “Storm Surfers 3D.”
Co-directed by Justin McMillan and Chris Nelius, the movie is the first surf flick filmed almost entirely in three-dimensional technology. Viewers get to experience what it’s like to cascade down a 20-foot wave in the open ocean off Western Australia, or ride inside massive tubes in Tasmania. Almost all of the footage was shot during the 2011 Southern Hemisphere winter, from May to August.

“We actually take the audience on the ride with us while we’re holding a 3-D camera,” said Clarke-Jones. “You’re actually like a seagull or something flying behind us, (and) it’s quite an incredible vision.”

“People who have seen it say, ‘We don’t surf, but we felt like we surfed,’” Carroll added.

It’s fitting that Carroll and Clarke-Jones chose Hawaii for the film’s U.S. debut. The two Australians forged their close bond while riding massive swells on Oahu’s North Shore during the mid-80s, a time when big-wave surfing was just starting to gain international momentum before exploding in the early 90s.

“I think this is where we kind of saw that same sort of thing in each other, where we just like to push it and it just doesn’t matter what the other guy’s doing; I just want to go for this one (massive wave),” Carroll told KITV4.

Nominated for Nikon Surf Movie of the Year, the Storm Surfers team were excited to be part of a room that was jam packed of surfing legends spanning 50+ years. Surfing Australia were celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary following its formation in 1963 as the Australian Surfriders Association and it was a special evening for all involved.

Joel Parkinson, who took home his first ASP World Tour title in 2012, was named male surfer of the year. With five-time champion Stephanie Gilmore named female surfer of the year and also inducted into Surfing Australia’s hall of fame.

10 OF THE BEST

To mark its 50th anniversary Surfing Australia were spoilt for choice in their campaign to find Australia’s 10 Most Influential Surfers 1963-2013. With Storm Surfer Tom Carroll listed at No. 6. The 10, in order of votes received, was: Mark Richards, Simon Anderson, Nat Young, Michael Peterson, Midget Farrelly, Tom Carroll, Layne Beachley, Wayne Bartholomew, Mark Occhilupo and Bob McTavish.

There was cheers and laughter as clips from Storm Surfers filled the screens around the room as the nominees were presented. It was safe to say that many in attendance have seen and enjoyed the exploits of Tom, Ross and Ben. So the team was thrilled when Storm Surfers 3D was announced winner of the 2013 AUSTRALIAN SURFING AWARDS - Nikon Surf Movie of the Year.

Of course, interest in the movie spiked again, when Stephanie Gilmore declared that Ross Clarke-Jones had become her favourite surfer after describing a scene from the film in where Ross’ explains his odd relationship with Big Wave Wipeouts!

About the board

During production of Storm Surfers 3D director Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan spent months locked in the edit suite with a massive archive of Storm Surfers photography. Justin come across this iconic shot of Ross Clarke-Jones tackling a monster wave off Pedra Branca. He thought it would look great on a board. Justin doesn’t do anything by half measures so he went away and created a handful of these boards to present as gifts to some key personnel who assisted the team on the production. We had one left, and the six of us in the office all wanted to take this baby home. Barring a violent game of rock paper scissors the only fair thing to do was to give it away to a fan. We hope it’s you…

Couple this with the Australian DVD release today and a standing ovation at the film’s USA premiere at the Santa Barbara film festival over the weekend and this all adds up to one fantastic week for the Storm Surfers team!

The hit Aussie movie Storm Surfers 3D has received the highest honours possible on an international and a domestic level in the past week.

In Hollywood last night Storm Surfers 3D was honoured at the International 3D Society annual awards for most outstanding achievement in a 3D documentary in 2012. This is an incredible achievement given the massive budget films that Storm Surfers 3D was up against and is a testament to the ground-breaking technical achievement of both our camera team and Deluxe’s post production crew.

Domestically Storm Surfers 3D picked up the most coveted industry accolade at the AACTAs (Australian Academy of Cinema, Television, Arts) awards when it took out the ‘Best Feature Length Documentary’ category.

The film was also honoured this week at the 2013 Surfworld International Surf Film Festival when it received the major prize of the Peter Troy ‘Spirit’ Award.

At Storm Surfers 3D’s USA red carpet premiere at the Arlington Centre’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival the film not only received a standing ovation but has been described by the Hollywood Reporter ‘as the best surf film since Step Into Liquid)

Following on from its Australian 2012 box office success, Madman Entertainment have today released the DVD, 2D & 3D Blu-Ray and Digital version of the film for Australian audiences keen to either revisit the adventure film of year or for those who missed it at the cinemas. GRAB A COPY TODAY!

Narrated by Toni Collette, STORM SURFERS is an epic, real-life adventure following two best friends on their quest to hunt down and ride the biggest and most dangerous waves in Australia. Aussie tow-surfing legend Ross Clarke-Jones and two-time world champion Tom Carroll enlist the help of surf forecaster Ben Matson and together they track and chase giant storms across the Great Southern Ocean.

Over one big-wave winter season in 2011 the team experience the brutal force of Mother Nature, score the waves of a lifetime and come close to death, before embarking on an expedition to surf a mythical wave that has never before been ridden. Seventy-five kilometres from land lies a secret reef known as Turtle Dove Shoal – and so begins a mission far beyond anything they have ever attempted in their lives…
