The Adventures of Ross Clarke Jones

There’s no rest for Ross Clarke-Jones, resident Storm Surfer. With the aid of sponsor Red Bull, when he’s not surfing big waves all over the world, he’s finding something else to fuel his adrenaline rush. Check out the video above and take a look at what Ross gets up to during his off time on Storm Surfers.

Meanwhile, over Christmas, Ross has been doing what he does best, taking on huge waves off the coast of Hawaii. Here’s what Ross Clarke-Jones had to say about his Christmas break…

‘It was an incredible Christmas day. We started out with 25ft+ beasts at Jaws all morning. It was a little bumpy but doing what felt like a 100km/h going straight felt awesome. It’s been almost 5 years since I’ve surfed waves like that. Then we went in for lunch and drove over the other side of Maui for a late session at Honolua Bay. There, perfect 6-8ft barrels. We finished off the day with a Christmas dinner in Lahina town. All of that put me to sleep, and I snored all the way back to pad we were staying at.

Robert Teriitehau, one of the first guys to windsurf Jaws in the 80′s, so kindly let me use his palace for Christmas. He is the craziest man I know. He’s not scared of anything. He does not wear a buoyancy vest at Jaws, and he drives the Jet Ski backwards while sitting on the handlebars. Basically, he’s mental, but he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

Last Monday, January 11 at Jaws was possibly the biggest day yet. And perfect for a while. Light winds made for some smooth conditions in the middle of the day. Soon after, I tried to chase the same swell back to California only to wake up coughing with the worst flu ever. I’ve been bedridden since. One week in bed is not my thing, and I’m having trouble sitting still – a bad patient. This flu knocked it out of me, but luckily the swell never really made it all the way to California as predicted.

Right now I’m sitting in rainy Half Moon Bay, a Red Bull Jet ski so kindly delivered sitting in the street out front, and I’m waiting for the next froth of swell to hit.

RCJ.
