After surfing our first session in NZ it became clear to the editor and the directors that a front camera mount needed to be constructed for the Tom/Ross ski. There are way to many funny and scary moments that happen aboard their vessel that are normally missed and we’re sure viewer would definitely be interested in seeing what goes on. Most front camera mounts for jet skis are mounted quite low attached the nose cover of the ski. This is because the unit needs to be fixed quite solidly to the vessel to ensure it wont snap off in massive surf. We’ve always wanted to develop a camera rig that is high enough to capture the communication between the ski driver and the surfer. Both the boys are wearing water proof mic’s as well so if the rig did exist we’d get some great coverage. After a fair bit of research we found out the rig doesn’t exist – so we built our own. The rig is built from solid stainless steel tubing with 3 solid contact points to the vessel to support the camera and ensure it doesn’t move around while we are shooting. The shot should allow us the cover all the on board banta between Ross and Tom, towing onto the giant waves and then collecting the surfer onto the rescue mat from the impact zone.
