Surfing Dangerous Banks: World First!

On Friday 27th June 2008 myself Tom Carroll, Ian Walsh from Hawaii and local boys James and Tyler Holmer-Cross and Zeb Critchlow pulled a world 1st taking on the wave the locals call Dangerous Banks.

Big Drop

The wave was far from pretty — in fact it was pretty ugly! The sea was massive and it was by far one of THE most challenging surf missions I have ever done in my 30 years chasing waves.

My hat goes off to the ski drivers and the poor film crew that went out in huge Tasmanian swell. It was a struggle just trying to keep from getting nailed let alone trying to shoot in that stuff.

Still we said we were going to go if it got big and Ben Matson made the call. We got word on Wednesday and by Friday we managed to get 20 crew out to the spot and back alive.

This wave holds the promise of something amazing and we will be keeping an eye on the conditions and see how it works in different weather. But for now we are still on for a couple more trips over the next six weeks.

Stay tuned. Ross

The mercury should do some proper journalism once in a while… Get facts you idiots and make a real raw story that people actually want to read…

Integrity – lets see how much credit Ross and Discovery provide the Tassie crew with in the final edit. If the recent 60 Minutes expose on the session at Pedra is any indication well its obvious that HollerX Ty and Jim and para will get little more than fine print billing for setting it all up and doing everything that Tom and Ross have done WITHOUT the major corporate backing. By the way – BIg Jim and Tyler HollmerX drove all night after this session and hit the water at White Beach at 5am the next day to take on 20 foot Shipstern – how about that Mr Mercury???
